Why rebranding is my favorite thing to do as a small business brand designer

I’m an illustrator/ brand designer specializing in small business branding and I’ll let you in on a little secret, the established businesses are actually my favorite clients. Rather they want a full rebrand or just one or two illustration designs.

Small business branding example at Reverie Roasters.
My favorite rebrand in my local community (I was not involved with this art)

I love working with new businesses in need of branding or logo design or any other kind of illustration design, but the most exciting clients are the ones that have been in business just long enough to have a solid client base but maybe haven’t got around to updating their branding quite yet.

Here’s why

1. They’ve refined their service/ product and they really know their business and their clients. Having such a clear mission/ message for the branding/ illustration design makes these clients easier to help them get exactly what they want. Plus I get to really learn about their business.

2. I get to see their customer base go nuts in the best way possible when they see the new illustration designs. A redesigned logo, or new mural can really hype up your customers and it’s the most satisfying thing as an illustrator to see merchandise with art you made flying off the shelves and making your clients extra profits.

3. It can really recapture the magic (and profits) of a successful opening day but I also get to see a thriving business really start to look like what the owner always envisioned and how the community rallies around that. It’s always incredibly rewarding to see.

I know as a small business owner a rebrand can sound like a lot but I’ve seen just one new illustration design do wonders for small businesses I’ve worked with. The first merch art design I did for Watermark Books and Cafe for instance sold out on the first day and continues to make hundreds in extra profits for them, plus constant comments from customers. Just imagine the same work applied consistently could do!

Rebranding is also not something you have to do all at once. Many of the most successful businesses I work with or see in my community do a rebrand gradually. They’re commissioning one or two illustrations at a time almost constantly and now they’ve ended up with several murals, window and vehicle wraps, multiple package designs, a couple of logos and one of the strongest most loyal customer base in town. I’ve showcased a great example of this in my local community in the short video.
