From an illustrator/ brand designer specializing in small business branding

A logo in the hospitality industry using illustration design for small business branding by brand designer Kamilla Sims.

When you think about small business branding art or illustration design might not be what you think of first but coming from an illustrator/ brand designer who specializes in small business branding it’s by far the easiest way to make your business stand out. Plus it’s also one of the easiest ways to deliver your unique message.

Throughout my life the trend in small local businesses has been to look the same. Take coffee shops for example. Get some clean modern logo, a minimalist interior and add just enough plants to make sure the place doesn't look too lifeless but not so much it’s difficult to water them all. I find this incredibly boring, and I don’t think I’m the only one.My favorite small business (coffee shops or not) are the ones that break that mold and push their own unique aesthetic, and art or illustration is the easiest way to do this.

It’s a scientific fact that people feel better, literally happier, when surrounded by visually interesting spaces. It’s also a fact that people remember images better than words. So really it only stands to reason that the best branding strategies for small business or not would use art or illustration design in your small business branding? It’s an obvious advantage.

In all likelihood if you look at your favorite larger business they frequently use illustration design in at least part of their branding. Take Starbucks for example. Part of their success is simply being one of the first but they still had some competition. Do you think they would have been as big of a success without a logo as memorable and artist as their mermaid. And all their interiors at least involve some well placed art. Not to mention even their packaging occasionally get seasonal illustrations.

Take this as a proof of concept

Demonstration of the importance of a good log for small business branding and how illustration design can help.

You don’t even have to spend as much money as Starbucks either, more is better, but just one illustration can go a long way. I’ve seen small businesses become a literal landmark in their community with a standout mural or make hundreds, even thousands, in extra profits selling merch with an artsy logo.

So let's test it.

You can see how much adding a mural might change your space. You can go from a boring coffee shop that looks like everyone else or something unique and cozy that people post about online.

Or how adding some illustration can give your customers a concrete concept to hang onto, interact and even spend money on.

Your branding should be something interesting, something people remember or want more of and most of all it should represent what makes the business uniquely you. And illustration is one of the easiest ways to do this and stand out at the same time!
